Diffusion allows small molecules such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and water to move freely in and out of the cell membrane. The cell membrane does not act as a barrier, it is freely permeable to the small molecules. This movement of molecules into a cell is maintained because as the oxygen diffuses into the tissues, it will be used immediately by the cell for respiration, releasing energy. Therefore there is a constant demand for oxygen and the concentration gradient is maintained.
